JCA varsity begins rebuilding phase this season

Focusing on developing young players, JCSGO Christian Academy (JCA) varsity teams for basketball, volleyball, and arnis began its rebuilding phase and regular practices after selecting players from tryouts.
With several new players joining the roster, the coaching staff is focused on building a competitive lineup through consistent training and player development.
Men’s Basketball Head Coach Gerard Alejo shared that the team is currently in a “rebuilding stage,” prioritizing younger players. They expect that most athletes are still learning the system and improving their skills.
“Actually, this is a rebuilding team. We’re focusing on the younger players. I’m trying to improve their fundamental skills, kasi mga raw talent pa talaga itong mga players natin,” Alejo said.
Despite the challenges, Alejo believes in the potential of a young roster and encourages supporters to remain patient.
“Don’t expect that we will be winners right away. There will be heartaches, but I think, just believe, we could pull surprises along the way.” Alejo added.
On the other hand, Men’s and Women’s Volleyball Coach Jeric Bellen also stated that the team is focusing on individual skills and conditioning as part of the rebuilding process.
“Actually ‘yung preparations na ginagawa namin is firstly ay conditioning at the same time naka-focus sa individual skills.”
“Ang ginagawa naming preparation is maipag-connect yung individual skills to team skills,” he added.
According to him, players need more exposure and game experience.
Meanwhile, the JCA arnis team started training the basics.
“Most of the players are new, so they are still learning the basic strikes. They need more training and practice,” Coach Ahrmand Gatchalian said.
“Since we have only had one training session, the only improvement so far is that the players have started to understand the basic strikes,” Gatchalian added.
The teams will compete in various tournaments, including:
- Socorro Inter School Athletic Competition (SISAC),
- Athletic Association of Private Schools (AAPS)
- Athletic Association of Private Schools (ASAPS).
The men’s basketball team is also currently preparing for the upcoming SISAC tournament, which is set to begin on August 7.
